High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew -
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

On Monday, Feb 21, Josh flew up to Portland in his Glasair, tail number n262wg. Shortly after Midnight, Feb 22, he left Portland destined for Crescent City, CA. Josh had radar service with FAA Seattle center while in route to Crescent City (CEC). Around 2am, Seattle ATC recieved a message from Josh saying that he had visual on the airport and was terminating radar service, switching to the local airport frequency for his final approach. This is the last transmission he made.

Josh and his plane have still not been located. The body of Maria L. Flores was found 700 yards offshore, near the Chetco River. Maria was a passenger in the plane with Josh.

Our thoughts and sympathies go out to Josh, his family, Maria's family, and Josh's friends.

The plane floated to the surface today. It was largely intact (the tail was broken off) and both windows were open. No body yet. The search for Josh is continuing.

Sun Feb 27 02:48:49 GMT 2005

Nothing found so far. Appearantly the divers are battling with four feet of visibility and large numbers of boulders on the ocean floor. The search is supposed to continue next week.

Sat Feb 26 21:20:50 GMT 2005
Divers have been diving all day, so far they haven't found the wreckage. I will be posting as soon as we know more.

Fri Feb 25 01:26:54 GMT 2005
More info: Dive is scheduled for 8:30am Saturday, their priority is finding Josh. Apparently the plane recovery is another matter that will need to be private, through the family, or through NTSB. The diving effort is going to be run through the Brookings Station, though the coast guard is supplying the dive. Thanks to Courtnee for tracking down this info.

Thu Feb 24 23:11:48 GMT 2005
The coast guard has rescheduled the diving team which was supposed to inspect the crash site until Saturday. The only thing confirmed to date is that sonar is picking up an object at around 40 ft. depth off the coast, there is also an oil slick apparently directly above this object.

Goin' to California with an aching, in my heart...

I'm leaving for California now. I'll be offline for the next 24 hours or so, but there are others who can update the site, and will when we find out any news.

Search and rescue has been called off. Only recovery operations are going on now.

The last radar contact with Josh's plane showed him at 400ft above ground. His plane executed a 270 degree turn and then fell out of radar contact. Search and rescue gave him a 2 hour window to be rescued.
